The Musa coccinea, Red Torch Banana, is a decorative banana with what must be the most beautiful banana flower ever. Starting as a tight red-orange bundle with yellow tips, the flower slowly opens over several months revealing a flaming torch. The plant looks very elegant in a garden even if the fruit is inedible.
Musa coccinea is sometimes called Musa uranoscopus due to an argument only a botanist could appreciate.
Musa (bananas) belong in the plant family Musaceae, within the order of the Zingiberales.
Please review the Zingiberales Planting and Caring page for additional information.
The Musa coccinea, Red Torch Banana seldom has more than one flower at the same time, but new shoots will produce new flowers as the plant matures.
The Red Torch Banana is a medium sized plant and reaches 6 to 10 ft. in height. Does well in medium containers that you can bring indoors for a while.
Full sun to partial shade. Moderately humid soil with pH 6 or less.
The inflorescence grows in the center and is very easy to cut. The flower always remains erect and is amazing as part of a flower arrangement. This is a fun plant that is very easy to grow. In a floral arrangement, just add some foliage and large red gingers and enjoy for weeks.
