Inflorescence
The Etlingera elatior, Red Torch Ginger,
produces dramatic flowers on glossy cherry red bracts on very long
stems (3 to 4 feet). As the bracts open up, the lower bracts curl
down giving the appearance of flower petals.
Most people think of
the red bracts as the bloom, but the true flower are small yellow
flowers that eventually poke out of the bracts as they age.
Once cut, the inflorescence is not as long lasting as those of
the cone gingers, but you can peel off the outer bract layers as the
flower ages to extend its useful life.
We
offer two Etlingera elatior
gingers, each with a different color. Please select
your favorites before ordering:
Gingers belong in the plant family
Zingiberaceae, within the order of the Zingiberales.
Please review the
Zingiberales Planting and Caring page for additional information.
