| General Information |
Inflorescence
The Calthea crotalifera, Yellow Ratteshaker,
sometimes called Yellow Rattesnake, produces an
oval, yellow inflorescence resembling a rattlesnake's rattle.
Small, white flowers will peek from the bracts as they mature.
The name "Calathea" of this genus
comes from the Greek word "kalathos", meaning a basket and probably
refers to the appearance of the flower heads of some species.
Calatheas do well in tropical and
subtropical climates where the winters are relatively warm. In
colder weather they must be cared for indoors close to a source of
natural light. Outdoors, it prefers partial shade and moist
humid conditions with well drained soil. It can tolerate full
sun in favorable soil and humidity conditions.
Calatheas belong in the plant family
Marantaceae, within the order of the
Zingiberales.
Please review the
Zingiberales Planting and Caring page for additional information.

| Plant Characteristics |
Blooming
The Calthea crotalifera, Yellow Ratteshaker
is a generous bloomer from Spring to Summer.
Height
The Yellow Rattleshaker is a medium sized plant
and reaches 3 to 4 ft. in height. Does well in medium containers
and can spend some time indoors. Makes a good focal plant in a
tropical garden.
Habitat
Prefers partial shade. Moderately humid soil.
Cut Flower
The inflorescences grow in 1 to 2 ft. stalks straight from the
ground and are very easy to cut. The flower is very
long-lasting in a floral arrangement, and is very popular with
florists for its unusual rattle shape.
This is a gardener-friendly plant and very easy to grow. In a
floral arrangement, just add some foliage and large red gingers and
enjoy for weeks.
