| General Information |
Inflorescence
The Calthea burle-marxii, Green Ice,
produces an oval, lime-green inflorescence resembling a basket
weave. Small, white flowers will peek from the bracts as they
mature.
The name "Calathea" of this genus
comes from the Greek word "kalathos", meaning a basket and probably
refers to the appearance of the flower heads of some species.
Calatheas do well in tropical and
subtropical climates where the winters are relatively warm. In
colder weather they must be cared for indoors close to a source of
natural light. Outdoors, it prefers partial shade and moist
humid conditions with well drained soil. It can tolerate full
sun in favorable soil and humidity conditions.
Calatheas belong in the plant family
Marantaceae, within the order of the
Zingiberales.

Zingiberales Planting and Caring page for additional information.
